Success in Marketing by Email

If you own a website, you may be thinking of trying to market your site by email. Or, perhaps you have already tried doing so without a great deal of success. In either case, you know that marketing by email can be successful-other webmasters do it all of the time, procuring great numbers of sales through the usage of email blasts and email newsletters. However, you aren't quite sure how to grab some of that success for yourself.

Tips for Getting Subscribers

In order for marketing by email to work, you need to have subscribers. If you only have a handful of people who subscribe to your email content (and if most of those people are friends and family), chances are you aren't going to get many sales. So, you need to get more subscribers. Here are some ideas that can help to get some more people to subscribe to your emails:

o Place email sign-up boxes on every page of your website.

Don't place them in obtrusive places, of course; however, putting subscriber sign-up boxes on each of your pages can help you to obtain more subscribers. This is because as soon as a person decides that she might want to opt-in for your emails, she won't have to hunt around (and possibly fail to find) your email sign-up page.

o Advertise a special offer on your website-and make it available only to newsletter subscribers.

Be sure to tell website visitors how to become subscribers-place this information next to the advertisement for the special offer. As for the offer, this could be a coupon for a discount off of a purchase, perhaps, or maybe a free item. The offer you advertise will really depend upon the nature of your website.

Tips for Keeping Subscribers

Success in marketing by email doesn't only involve getting subscribers-it also involves keeping the subscribers you get. It may sound as if this would be simpler; however, this isn't always quite so easy. All it takes is one not-so-interesting email or one email that is just a blatant advertisement, and you may have several readers heading for the "unsubscribe here" link.

Follow these guidelines to try to make sure that once you get a reader, you can keep that reader:

o Remember that content is more important than anything. Each email you send out-whether it is a newsletter or email blast-must contain unique information. The content that you send out to your subscribers needs to relate to your website, too. For example, if your website is one that sells handcrafted woven goods, sending out a newsletter about the five best Firefox add-ons simply doesn't make sense. That isn't the reason why your subscribers requested your newsletter emails.

o Marketing by email should never be looked upon as simply a way to send out an advertisement. Yes, you can include an advertisement as a part of your email blast or newsletter; however, it should not ever be the main portion of your email. Advertisements should make up no more than one-fourth of any email sent to your subscribers.
